Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen Type: Rectal and vaginal
  • Container/Tube (Preferred): Starswab (See Microbiology collection guide)
  • Collection Instructions:
  1. Insert swab(s) in vagina, and sample vaginal introitus
  2. Insert same swab(s) approximately 1 inch beyond anal sphincter. Gently rotate swab(s) to sample anal crypts. Feces should be evident on swab.

Positives for Group B Strep automatically have susceptibilities performed if patient has Penicillin allergy.
